Maadu Ganga – River

The western cost of Sri Lanka, where the sparkling waters of the Indian Ocean lustfully kiss the golden sands of one of the best beach stretches in the world. Travelling down 80 kilometers on this magical avenue of pleasure, commonly called ‘The Galle Road (High Way– A2), one can reach the town of Balapitiya, where the mysterious "Maadu Ganga" (Madu River) embraces the Indian Ocean, where we embark on a journey which holds a story worth telling.

River Safari

Walk few steps towards the end of the pier where the vessels of wonder await you patiently. Get ready to explore the fascinating Madu Ganga Wet Land; paradise for the eco tourist.

Madu Ganga Wet Land spreads across 915 hectares, out of which 770 hectares is covered with water. Sail downstream for about a kilometer, the river opens its doors to 36 spectacular islands covering the rest 145 hectares. The inhabitants of these islands are mostly traditional fishermen and to some extent they are engaged in some traditional cottage industries such as producing peeled cinnamon and cinnamon oil.

The estuary of Madu Ganga and the many mangrove islets on it forms a complex coastal wetland ecosystem with high ecological, biological and aesthetic significance. Being home to 303 species of plants belonging to 95 families and to 248 species of vertebrate animals, it might be one of the last remaining tracts of pristine mangrove forest in Sri Lanka.

For the adventure enthusiast, Madu Ganga showcases the Garden of Eden. Spend a night inside a tent by the bonfire in an un inhabited island, getting your taste buds satisfied by the fresh catch on BBQ and wake up next morning to explore the rest of many wonders alog the journey. Bird watching

The eco system in Madu Ganga wet land is immensely colorful with its flora and fauna. It’s just a binocular away from you and 115 species itself will encounter this spectacular world, visible to only keen eyes.

Game Fishing and Deep Water Fishing

From November to April is the season of the catch. Unspoiled sea and fishing zones of Balapitiya holds an abundance of games fish for the keen angler. The voyage is just few kilometers away from the coast, yet the catch is tremendously overwhelming.

Close to the Coast you’ll find Grouper, Snapper Emperor and Bonefish, bit further out, Indian Mackerel, Spanish Mackerel, Seer fish, Kingfish, Barracuda, Barramundi, Jackfish, Tuna and Shark. During trolling you will often see schools of dolphins accompanying the boat.
